MY EQUIPMENT

Although talented photographers can sometimes create compelling images with simple photographic equipment, I am committed to the practice of always using the best cameras and lighting equipment available. For that reason, I always use the most current professional-grade camera bodies, lenses, and flashes. In addition to my primary tools, I also own a wide array of backup equipment to insure that I can continue to do my best work if the unthinkable happens.

You may come across photographers using consumer-grade camera bodies with small cropped-sensors paired with economical lenses. They are budget-friendly when photographers are starting out, but any image that is enlarged bigger than a 5x7 will enlarge any of the flaws in the image such as blur and pixel enlargement. Have you ever seen a low-resolution image on a big screen TV? You start to see all the little dots that make up the image. The bigger the TV is, the more likely you will want to upgrade your cable service to HD (high-definition) services. Pictures work the same way. As you enlarge them, they reveal the flaws because they are bigger. It is for these reasons that I made the investment in professional-grade camera bodies with full-sized, HD sensors and fast, high-grade lenses to capture our images even in low-light conditions.

My primary camera bodies are Sony's flagship cameras—the Sony a7R II. The spectacular low light performance of the Sony a7R II is particularly important when I am photographing events in dark hotel rooms, churches, reception halls, or when I am working outside at night. That camera body has no equal when it comes to creating photographs in those situations. When working those events, I carry two camera bodies with two different lenses mounted and alternate between them depending on the needs of the moment. These cameras provide us with the largest file sizes available from any mirrorless or SLR manufacturer (42 megapixels) which can be extremely important in our commercial product photography work.

As far as the lenses go, only the best will do. Wether it is a fast prime lens for low light portraits, or a flexible zoom lens for events; no corners were cut in my lens selections. Each has their strengths for a given job, and the flexibility gives us the premium images that my clients have come to expect. Although lenses are just tools, they are the camera's "eyes" and the better they are, the more they see.

Proper lighting in professional photography is very important. Some photographers over-emphasize either "natural" or "window light" (which indicates they either don't have the proper flash equipment or don't know how to use it) and still others that attach a consumer-grade portable flashes known as a Speedlights, directly to the top of their camera (which produces red-eyes and harsh shadows). To obtain the best flattering light for a client, most professional photographers will get the flash off-camera and use some form of sync cable or a wireless trigger.

The other problem with these consumer-grade Speedlights is that in most cases they are NOT powerful enough to over-power the sun, say at the beach. So many photographers combines flashes to make them more powerful. Some of the expected problems that arise from this approach are that the multiple flashes create multiple shadows on a client's face AND the setup is unnecessarily complicated. For example, if the photographer combines 4 Speedlights on a speed-ring to make one powerful light, you will also have 16 AA batteries, 4 sync cables, 5 wireless triggers with 5 additional AA batteries and 4 different shadows cast on the model's or the client's face. With all those gadgets, what could possibly go wrong?! Each time the lighting needs to be adjusted, requires that the photographer walk up to each group of Speedlights and push buttons...on EACH flash! I cringe just thinking about this from the client's perspective, as well as my own (grin).

The right tool for the job is always going to be a bigger investment but the quality of the light output from professional-grade lighting is substantially better than a consumer-grade Speedlight (like 10 times more!). 3 Profoto flashes can produce more light than as many as 30 of those Speedlights with out all the complications! That is why I utilize professional moonlights from Profoto. It was designed to recycle quickly, setup rapidly, and put out consistent flattering light with fewer troubleshooting moments. If I need to adjust the lighting with Profoto, I adjust ALL the lights from a single transmitter on top of our cameras. That means more time spent engaging the client and working on the images, and less time fussing over connections and batteries and buttons. That is progress!
